Policy Statement
The Dance Complex is committed to providing a safe, welcoming environment where every child can thrive. We recognise our legal and moral obligation to protect children from harm, abuse, and neglect. Our commitment aligns with Western Australian legislation and the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations to ensure the well-being and protection of all young people in our care.
We maintain a zero-tolerance stance against any form of child abuse or neglect. Breaches of this policy may lead to disciplinary action and legal proceedings where applicable.
Purpose
This policy aims to:
Ensure all staff, contractors, and volunteers understand their roles in protecting children.

Promote a child-safe culture responsive to the needs and rights of children.
Provide practical procedures for identifying, reporting, and responding to child safety concerns.

All personnel must hold current Working With Children Checks and adhere to these legal requirements at all times.
Responsibilities
Management
Implement, monitor, and review child protection practices consistent with WA laws.
Train and support staff and volunteers in child safety duties.
Respond promptly and transparently to any reports of harm or neglect.
Inform families of their role in supporting child safety.
Staff, Contractors, and Volunteers
Complete all required checks and training before engagement.
Adhere strictly to child protection laws and studio policies.
Immediately report any concerns about a child’s safety.
Treat all children with respect and provide a safe environment.
Parents and Guardians
Share accurate information about their children.
Collaborate with The Dance Complex to maintain a safe environment.
Communicate any concerns promptly to staff.
Code of Conduct
All community members including students, parents, carers, staff, and visitors must:
Use respectful, appropriate language and behaviour at all times.
Avoid isolated contact with children without consent and appropriate supervision.
Never use physical force except in emergencies.
Follow procedures on photographing or recording children, ensuring privacy and consent.
Abstain from alcohol, drugs, or smoking on premises during working hours.
Bullying, harassment, or aggressive behaviour is not tolerated and may lead to suspension or removal.
Parents/guardians should never discipline or approach other children; concerns must be directed to studio staff.
Child Safety Procedures
Physical contact with children must be appropriate, explained, and consented to beforehand.
Supervision in changing areas respects privacy and ensures staff presence near entrances.
Children must never be left unsupervised in private areas.
Late pickups are managed through clear communication with guardians.
All allegations or suspicions of harm are taken seriously, reported confidentially, and addressed immediately.
Photography, Media & Privacy
Staff may take photos and videos for studio use; parents complete a consent form at enrolment to record preferences.
Parents and visitors must not record or photograph children without prior permission.
Personal information is handled securely in accordance with WA privacy laws and is not shared without consent.
Online Safety and Cyberbullying
The Dance Complex promotes safe and respectful online behaviour following national and WA guidelines. Cyberbullying is strictly prohibited. Education and monitoring of digital communications support student safety.
Reporting Concerns and Complaints
All staff and volunteers are mandated reporters and must promptly report any suspected child abuse or neglect to the Department of Communities or WA Police.

Staff Training and Recruitment
All staff and volunteers must have current Working With Children Checks before commencing duties. Regular training on child safety, communication, and mandatory reporting is compulsory to maintain a high standard of safeguarding.
Definitions
Child: Any person under 18 years of age.
Harm: Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, or exploitation as legally defined in WA.
Working With Children Check: A legal screening clearance required for anyone working with children in WA.
